Closing Remarks!
-
Hello everybody -
the Live portion of this Forum is now over, but everyone is welcome to add further Comments or even start new Topics. All further comments are welcome, but I would also like to encourage you to try to wrap up discussions, tie together issues, and summarize.
I will start new Forums on Force Calibration to let the discussion on these issues continue afresh.
Where does this go next? Certainly, go back to your labs and put into practice the methods and tricks you've learned here.
But also keep posting your comments, ideas, papers, and suggestions here in the Forums on this and any other SPM topic. Let us know your new ideas and feedback.
Second, I invite you all to create and edit Wiki pages on "Probe-Pedia", which is like Wikipedia, but for SPM. This is where we can assemble authoritative information - but we can still update and edit it dynamically. Check it out here, and please create or edit a page!

Third, there's an opportunity to discuss these issues in detail thanks to the hard work of Dr. Richard Gates and co-workers at NIST - here are the details from Dr. Gates:
In June (16th and 17th), we are holding a Workshop here at NIST on Calibrations and Standards for Nanomechanical Measurements which will cover both AFM and nanoindentation . The invited Speakers for the AFM portion will includesome of the key researchers in this area and include:
Dr. Greg Blackman, Dupont Nanocomposite Technologies Professor Rob Carpick, Director of the Nanotechnology Institute, University of Pennsylvania Dr. Jason Cleveland, CEO, Asylum Research Dr. Greg Meyers, Dow Chemical Professor John Sader, University of Melbourne Dr. Chanmin Su, Director of Research, Veeco Instruments
For those of you that are interested, a brief description of the workshop is available on the web at http://www.nist.gov/msel/ceramics/calibrations-and-standards.cfm The flyer describing the workshop can be found at http://www.nist.gov/msel/ceramics/nanomechanical_properties/upload/NanoCalStd-Flyer.pdf
Finally - the Nanoprobe Network is looking for volunteers, including students, who would like to join our Advisory Boards. We need your help in organizing future Live Forums, promoting and building the site, providing new ideas, and helping in any other way that interests you. If you are interested, please send me an email: carpick@seas.upenn.edu
That reminds me - we are having a "Best Image" contest and you can win a free iPod nano just by contributing an SPM image. See the details here: http://nanoprobenetwork.org/best-image-contest
Thanks to everyone for their participation! Stay tuned for more!
best regards, Rob Carpick
